About the Holy Orthodox Diocese of Texas

Apostolic Faith · Living Tradition · Texas Roots

Our Sacred Heritage

The Holy Orthodox Diocese of Texas stands in the unbroken apostolic succession that flows from Christ Himself through His twelve apostles, faithfully preserving the doctrine, worship, and life of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church for the next generation of believers.

We are not a new religion or a recent invention · we are the continuation of the same Church that was born at Pentecost, that defined the Christian faith at the Seven Ecumenical Councils, and that has prayed the same Divine Liturgy substantially unchanged for over 1,600 years.

“Stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”

— 2 Thessalonians 2:15

Diocesan Structure

Following the ancient canonical order received from the Apostles, the diocese is governed by the Bishop, whose pastoral authority is exercised in conciliar fashion with both clergy and faithful laity:

1The Bishop

Ruling Hierarch · The center of the diocese, in apostolic succession. The Bishop possesses the fullness of the priesthood and is the chief celebrant of the divine services.

2The Chancellery

Administrative Office · Led by the Chancellor (an archpriest appointed by the Bishop). Coordinates communication, maintains official records, and handles legal matters.

3The Diocesan Council

Consultative Body · The Bishop presides, with elected priests and lay professionals. Advises on budget, property, and compliance with state laws.

4The Diocesan Assembly

Annual Gathering · All priests and lay delegates from each parish meet yearly to review financial reports, vote budgets, and elect council members.

5The Deaneries

Geographic Districts · The diocese is divided into deaneries, each led by a Dean (a veteran priest) who serves as area supervisor for local clergy.

6The Parishes

Local Communities · Served by a Rector (priest appointed by the Bishop) and a Parish Council of elected lay members who handle local administration.

Texas Roots, Universal Faith

Beginning with our first parish — Saint Demetrios Orthodox Church in Fort Worth — the diocese is committed to serving the spiritual needs of Orthodox Christians throughout the great state of Texas. From the urban centers to the rural communities, from established Orthodox families to those discovering the ancient faith for the first time, we are here to serve.

As the Lord provides and the faithful gather, new parishes will be established under the guidance of His Grace, the Ruling Hierarch.
